Commonwealth Club of California returns to KSPB airwaves (1/17/2026)

KSPB is pleased to announce that the Commonwealth Club of California radio program returns to our airwaves on Saturday, January 17, 2026. It will air on Saturday mornings from 7:00 to 8:00 AM, adding to our block of public affairs, science, and cultural programs.

The Commonwealth Club of California is the largest and oldest public affairs forum in the U.S. For over 90 years, the Club has been presenting addresses by individuals actively concerned with the day-to-day decisions that can affect lives and livelihoods across the nation and around the world. Past speakers have included Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala; Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger; 1992 Presidential Candidate Ross Perot; Feminist Author Susan Faludi; and Microsoft Chairman and CEO Bill Gates. The Club’s non-partisan policy strives to bring a balanced viewpoint on all issues in its commitment to “getting the facts.”

This week is Tim Wu: “The Age of Extraction.” Can we reclaim control of our economy to make it work for everyone? What needs to be understood about the big tech platforms before that could even be attempted? Tim Wu has a plan. Wu, a scholar and the former White House official who coined the phrase “net neutrality,” has examined the rise of “platform power” and the risks and rewards of working within such systems. It’s a topic he explores in his latest book “The Age of Extraction.” (Recorded November 10, 2025)
